Crawley contest adjudicator's comments

Star Wars Excitement is created in opening section. Cornets + Trumpets give a ‘sparkle’, Dynamics are quite well-observed. A good opening, with a few untidy + loose moments. Occasional muted tuning shows.  Effective rhythmic percussion noted.  Melody line loses flow at times, but a well-presented number.

Share my Yoke Loose entry in tutti. Cornet soloist displays a good sound, not without blemish. Lyrical feel for the music, and the solo legato style enhances the performance, and confidence grows with a refined close to the music.

Heyken’s Serenade Excellent narration and some of your best playing so far. Great original idea with impressive arrangement.

Adventures in Brass Reasonable balance in ensemble and cornet soloist shows lyrical qualities and tasteful euph response. In 15 warm sounds impress. Flow + phrasing ok in 16.  A little careless entry 17.  Just lacks a little conviction up to 21.  Rhythmic feel is ok here and some controlled ensemble noted.  I would prefer more warmth in ff tutti, with a better fff close.

Much to admire in a well-balanced choice of music, with impressive solo feature.

Thank you

David Horsfield
