Another win for LGB Brass

LGB Brass was praised for its exciting and lyrical playing when it took first place in a competition on Sunday May 18th. LGB defeated bands from across the southern counties to win its section at the annual entertainment contest at the Hawth in Crawley.

The band played a short concert including music from the film Star Wars and the cornet solo Share My Yoke, performed by principal cornet, Simon Emberley.

The programme also included Variations on Heykin’s Serenade transcribed by band musical director, Ian Stewart, and featuring solo cornet, Simon Tuck, as compere. The audience heard several versions of the Serenade, in Chinese and German-styles and as it would be played by a Scout band and on an old gramophone. Finally, members of the band played the Serenade on tuned wine and beer bottles.

The band was judged on its musical performance, entertainment value and deportment. The adjudicator, David Horsfield, described the programme as “well-balanced” and praised the band for its exciting and lyrical playing.

The competition was organised by the Southern Counties Amateur Brass Band Association. Last month (April), at a contest in Hove, LGB Brass won the cups for best musical director and best trombone section.

  • Congratulations to Ian Stewart's other band, Friary Guildford, for taking first place in its section at Crawley by five clear points.
