LGB Brass hosts American visit
Students from Blufton University, Ohio, spent a long weekend in
Lewes with LGB Brass (May 20th-22nd).
The visit was part of the university's cross-cultural programme and
included music students, members of the Blufton's Brass Society
ensemble and undergraduates studying other subjects.
The students, most of whom stayed with LGB Brass members and their
families, had a busy itinerary in Sussex. The highlight was a joint
concert in Eastbourne Town Hall on Friday evening.
The programme included American favourites from the Brass Society,
including Fanfare for a Common Man by Aaron Copeland,
American Patrol and Battle Hymn of the Republic. In the
second half, LGB Brass performed a selection of traditional and modern
brass band music, included The Contestor, Breezing Down
Broadway, the competition test piece Saint-Saens
Variations and the horn and cornet features True Loves
Ways and Spanish Eyes. The concert ended with a joint
performance of 76 Trombones and Sussex By The Sea
(conducted by the Mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Carolyn Heaps).
The visit itinerary also included a walking tour of Lewes, a
reception with Mayor of Lewes, Cllr Mike Turner, and trips to Firle
Place, Seven Sisters and Battle. Members of the band said goodbye
after coffee at Caburn Cottages tearoom. The students are spending a
few days in London before flying home to the US on Thursday.
