American Brass in concert

The best of brass music is on offer at a concert in Eastbourne Town Hall this month (May).

The prize-winning local band, Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass, is joining forces with Brass Society, an ensemble from Bluffton University, Ohio, to present American Brass In Concert.

The concert is at the Assembly Hall, Eastbourne Town Hall on Friday May 21st at 7.30pm. The programme includes traditional brass band favourites, popular classics and music from film and shows.

Trombone highlight

One of the highlights will be a performance by at least 10 trombones of the hit song Seventy Six Trombones, from the 1957 show The Music Man. The evening also features music by Aaron Copland, Scott Joplin, J S Sousa and George and Ira Gershwin. It will end with Sussex’s unofficial anthem, Sussex by The Sea.

Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass (LGB Brass for short) is a favourite band at events in Eastbourne. This summer, it is giving five concerts at Eastbourne Bandstand and is again performing for the popular Christmas Gala Concert at St Andrew’s Church.

National contest success

LGB Brass recently won a place at the National Brass Band Finals in Harrogate in September, where it will represent London and the south-east in a competition against the best bands in Britain. The band is based at the All Saints Centre in Lewes and can be contacted via its website www.lgbbrass.co.uk

Brass Society

Brass Society is a student brass ensemble that performs classical and modern music. The concert in Eastbourne is part of the ensemble’s two-week tour of England and Wales, which includes a performance in Salisbury Cathedral. The American students will be staying with members of LGB Brass and will be visiting Lewes, Battle and Firle Place.

Tickets for American Brass In Concert are £5. They are available on the door or can be reserved by emailing jane.stewart63@btinternet.com or phoning 01403 750493.
