Paddock Prom pulls in the crowds
More
than 1,000 people attended Proms in the Paddock in Lewes organised by
LGB Brass and Commercial Square Bonfire Society.
The
audience was treated to a spectacular firework display and three brass
band concerts in one.
LGB
Brass, conducted by Ian Stewart, began the evening with a selection of
traditional and modern music. Younger members of the audience danced
in front of the stage and conducted while the band played Breezin
Down Broadway, and Let’s Face The Music and Dance. The
programme also featured Share My Yoke, a cornet solo by Simon
Emberley, and Variations on Heykens Serenade, which was
specially arranged by Ian Stewart and included the band’s impression
of a wind-up gramophone.
The
baton then passed to Chris King conducting Friary Guildford, one of
the most successful brass bands in the south of England. Their
programme included hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Sweet
Georgia Brown
and the tenor horn solo Misty
performed by Nigel Stevens. The band finished with
an exciting brass band version of Toccata in D Minor.
The
two bands then came together and nearly 60 musicians led the audience
in traditional prom style with Jerusalem
and Land of
Hope and Glory. Stunning fireworks from
Commercial Square Bonfire Society accompanied the 1812 Overture
and the evening ended with Sussex by the
Sea.
