Massed bands join for The
Big Blow
Never mind the Folkestone earthquake, the ceiling nearly flew off a
hall in Ringmer on Sunday (April 29 2007). About 150 musicians almost
raised the roof of the community college at The Big Blow concert.
The
event was the highlight of a weekend festival in Lewes district,
organised by Lewes’s band LGB Brass, Lewes Twinning Association and
Ringmer Community College. More than 70 musicians travelled from
Waldshut, Lewes’s twin town in Germany, for the occasion.
The
five bands taking part in The Big Blow were: LGB Brass; Ringmer
Community College Wind and Big Bands; Waldshut’s town band, Stadtmusik
Waldshut, and its junior band, Jugendorchester.
Each
band gave a short concert. The evening ended with a massed band
performance. The audience of around 200 people joined in for the
finale, Sussex by the Sea.
Mayor of Lewes, Merlin Milner, said “If you add together players and
singers this must be a record – at least for Lewes District.”
The
evening also included the world premier performance by LGB Brass of a
new piece, March Stadtmusik Waldshut. It was written for the
occasion by the band’s resident composer, Nigel Simmons. Musical
director, Ian Stewart, presented the score to Arne Muller, the
conductor of Stadtmusik Waldshut.
·
On Saturday afternoon (29 April
2007), the Mayor of Lewes, Merlin Milner, and Chair of Lewes Twinning
Association, Mike Turner, welcomed Stadtmusik Waldshut at a reception
at the John Harvey Tavern. The band then treated shoppers to a free
outdoor concert in Lewes precinct.
·
The Big Blow festival was supported
by funding from Lewes Town Council and the Local Network Fund.
