LGB Brass sweeps the board at Easter Contest
LGB Brass won five trophies at a competition held on the Isle of
Wight on Easter Sunday.
The band, conducted by Ian Stewart, won the top award of the
contest – the cup for Best Musical Performance. It also won the cup
for Best Entertaining Band.
LGB Brass’s principal cornet player, Simon Emberley, was named Best
Soloist for his performance of the brass band arrangement of Share
My Yoke by Joy Webb. The band’s players also won cups for Best
Horn Section and Best Percussion Section.
The competition, hosted by Shanklin Town Brass Band, was part of
the Wight Brass 2007 festival and attracted players from across
southern England. Each band was required to give a short concert,
which was judged for its musicianship and entertainment value.
LGB’s varied programme featured the band’s trombone players in
76 Trombones and the principal euphonium, Tony Line, in the solo
Benedictus from The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.
Several pieces were specially arranged for the competition. One, by
Ian Stewart, interpreted Heyken’s Serenade in turn in the style
of a German oompah band, Chinese ballet company, a boys’ brigade, a
wind-up gramophone and a group of football supporters.
