Ashie’s off to a great start

Training band member Ashie Richardson has been awarded the Mayor’s Cup for Most Improved Young Player 2018, receiving the cup and a £50 Bonners voucher kindly gifted by the Mayor’s office.

The cup was donated in 2009 by Councillor Mike Chartier, and was presented this year by the current Mayor of Lewes, Councillor Janet Baah.

Ashie has been learning the trumpet and cornet for just over three years – she is taught and inspired by Christina, who also happens to be the band’s Principal Cornet. Together, they are hoping that she will be ready for grade 5 early next year.

A big fan of music; Ashie also plays the cello and gained a distinction in her last grading. This year she has taught herself the keyboard and composed a piece of music ready for her GCSE music exam next year. Last week she bought herself an electric drum kit! (And we’re always on the lookout for percussionists…).

Ashie recently had a fantastic opportunity to do her work experience placement with Christina and East Sussex Music Service. Though she had never played the recorder, she picked this up straight away and was able to join in with recorder and brass lessons that Christina was giving during the week to primary and secondary school children. She is part of the ESMS band and is studying for her grade 4 music theory.

LGB would like to thank Ashie for her enthusiasm and commitment and wish her all the best with her future music making.
