LGB Brass review of 2009

Fundraising
LGB Brass raised £1,300 for Sussex Air Ambulance at the Brass for Life concert,
at Lewes Town Hall in March. The concert was hosted and
supported by The Mayor of Lewes, Cllr Michael Chartier, and he joined
band members to present a cheque to the Air Ambulance crew at their
base at Dunsford Park.

The band chose to support Sussex Air Ambulance
when members heard how the service had saved the life of a former
band member, Matthew Perry, who was severely injured in a road
accident in 2008. Matthew and his family were in the 250-strong
audience for the concert and they were also at the presentation at the
air base.
Concerts
The band had a busy concert programme during 2009, including its
first concert for several years in Lewes Grange Gardens. Rain
eventually stopped play but not before Cllr Amanda Dean, the Mayor of
Lewes, conducted LGB Brass for Sussex by the Sea. Donations at the end
of the concert raised over £200 for the Mayor's charities: Women's Aid
and the Clock Tower refuge.

The annual Proms in the Paddock in August saw another
capacity crowd watch LGB Brass, the band's 'Nippers' ensemble and East
Sussex Community Choir. The band also performed at Eastbourne
Bandstand, St Andrew's Church in Eastbourne, local village fetes,
Lewes Bonfire and carnival, Remembrance Day parades and a wide range
of Christmas events.
Prizes
Trombonist Michael Frost won the first new award for young brass
musicians. The award was launched in May by the then Mayor of Lewes,
Cllr Michael Chartier, and will be presented annually.
Emma Boswell (rep cornet) won the 2009 Player of the Year award. Musical Director, Ian Stewart, presented the
trophy at the LGB Brass
band dinner in December.
In June, LGB Brass took part for the first time in the Whit Friday
Marches, the annual brass band contests in and around Saddleworth in Greater
Manchester. The band took second place in its section at the contest in Grotten.
LGB also won the trophy for third place in the SCABA spring
contest at Hove Town Hall in April.
Visit to Waldshut
In May, LGB Brass had a successful visit to Lewes's twin town of Waldshut
in Germany. The visit was hosted by Waldshut's band
Stadtmusik Waldshut, which came to Lewes in 2007. LGB Brass gave a
concert outside Waldshut town hall and took part in a joint concert
with Stadtmusik Waldshut.

Members had a tour of the local area and took part in a games
afternoon organised by the German band.

Members
2009 saw new players arrive and some long-standing members leave.
The band welcomed: cornets Adam Kearley, Lucy Sullivan, Harvey Hall,
Phil Goldsmith, Christina Farey and Joe Knight; euphonium Richard
Sherlock; baritones Liz Cowlett and Steve Gietzen (returning after
university); and B flat basses Andrew Wingrove and Eduardo Roberto.
Our oldest player, Jim Calloway (2nd cornet) decided to retire and
Ian Hobbs (solo cornet) moved to Horsham Borough Band. The band also
said farewell to Katy Wakeford-Brown (solo trombone) and Zac Dawson
(solo cornet), who both left to study music, and Michelle Eldridge
(solo cornet), who moved to Battle Band.
Jenny Line
LGB band was devastated
by the loss of Jenny Line, who died in the early hours of Monday 26th
January 2009 after a brave battle with cancer.
Jenny had been an integral part of the band
since 1995. She played solo horn until 2007 before moving to
flugel. Known universally in the band as ‘mother’,
Jenny cared for everyone and encouraged all she came into contact with.
She played and depped with many local
bands and was well-known and liked by all who met her. The band
played for Jenny's funeral and continues to miss her deeply.
